Description

Ideas have consequences, and worldviews matter. Expose your student to history’s most powerful ideas and the men who developed them. We’ve put this course together because of the rise of ideology over truth in the public square, and because we knew the best way for students to get a hold of powerful ideas is to send them to the actual sources with a bit of background.

The course would be an excellent capstone for upperclassmen who want to put together all the pieces they’ve accumulated across disciplines like science, literature, history, and art. They will come out of the survey more informed about the ideas that form the world they are entering, and to “destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…” (2 Corinthians 10:5, ESV)

This demanding high-school homeschool elective course in the humanities includes several components to train your student in forming a biblical worldview and applying it to the glory of God.

  • introductory videos on each philosopher by R.C. Sproul from his popular Consequences of Ideas video series including Plato, Aristotle, Locke, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, and more;
  • primary source readings from the full, historic books by each philosopher;
  • secondary readings from John Frame’s monumental A History of Western Philosophy and Theology (purchased separately) to provide a Christian analysis of the philosopher, his ideas, and his legacy;
  • a mixture of assignments, articles, quizzes and research projects to reinforce learning.

    We consider this course to be essential to a complete high school education for our children. We host an in-home co-op where the students discuss what they read in the course and all of our grads have appreciated later having been through it.

    I wish there was more measurable testing. Thankfully my student was pretty self-motivated, and I know he did the reading because he was interested in it. I had a time figuring out a grade to give him.
